the Lauca National Park in the far north east is a high Andean semi desert with
many plants and animals adapted to the environment. Here at an altitude of 4000m
water from the melting snow of volcanoes form soft boggy places known locally
as bofedales. A vicuña a wild relative of the llama keeps to the
cover of resinous tola bushes. The volcano Parinacota rises to 6342m on
the border with Bolivia.
