Pará state: A ceramic tanga or pubic cover from the Marajoara culture
of the Island of Marajó in the Amazon mouth. Towards the end of the 19th
century travellers noticed large earthern mounds on the island, where funerary
urns and artifacts had been buried. The Marajoara culture existed between the
5th and 14th centuries. The people lived mainly by fishing, but also farmed on
the fertile Amazon várzea, or floodplains.     |
