Brazil: Sugar Loaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. Known in Portuguese as the Pão de Açúcar, the name is thought to derive from hill-shape moulds created in the sugar-refining process, though perhaps more plausibly it comes from a Tupi Guarani Indian word, pau-nh-açuquá meaning 'high hill'. Sugar Loaf mountain is 396m (1,300ft) high and cable cars have been taking passengers to the summit for almost 100 years.
