Olmec, Mexico. This basalt stele [Stele 2] was discovered in 1925 near the Great Pyramid in La Venta. It is 2m 37cm high and the carving appears to represent some form of politico-religious event with a dominant figure in the supreme position over others. The carving also contains plenty of other detail such as a turtle representing fertility or the finishing touch of a head of maize [corn cob].
