Olmec, Mexico. This is known as Monument 54 and the head is beautifully fashioned at the top of a column of basalt rock. Over the years the face has been damaged so interpretations of the work vary considerably. Possibly it depicts a monkey or a wise man looking towards the sky or observing the heavens.
