Margaret Mee in one of the open waterways of the Anavilhanas archipelago/
Arquipélago das Anavilanhas, Rio Negro, Brasil. At this point the river
is up to 10 miles /16 kms wide though it can be considerably more in the high
water season from November to April. But the way is interrupted by approximately
400 islands built largely of white sand so forming countless channels and lakes.
The area of 350,000 hectares has been protected as an Ecological Station since
1981. In high water the only way to see the forest is by water. In the dry season
the islands are exposed and . When Margaret Mee was there in May 1988 the water
had just begun to fall. |
