The Kayapó of the Xingu, Brazil
The Kayapó Indians are an indigenous tribe inhabiting land on both sides of the Xingu River in Pará state Brazil. Today they number about 5000 and refer to themselves as Mebêngokrê, which means ‘the men from the water place.’ These photos by Claire and Bill Leimbach were taken in the 1970s.
