Chile:
an Araucanian family in the late 19th century. The Araucanians are also known
as the Mapuche. Fierce warriors, having resisted both the Incas and the Spaniards,
the Mapuche were finally overcome between 1860 and 1885 during the military campaign
known as the 'Pacification of the Araucania'. Many were massacred while
others were placed in reservations.
