the Atacama desert flanks the Pacific Ocean for more than 1000kms. Here close
to Antofagasta the Andes mountains rise immediately inland, and offshore the ocean
bed plummets over 8000m to one of the greatest depths in the world. White sea-bird
guano covers the rocks at the base of the cliffs. The rock arch in the distance
is known as 'La Portada' - 'The Doorway'. |
