Chile: the salt lake and salt flat of San Martín lie close to the frontier with Bolivia. Ollaguë volcano 5863m beyond is considered as 'active' because of the fumeroles - active often steaming, gas emitting vents. The area is typically dry and cold and virtually uninhabited. Most of the original geological studies of this volcanic area were made by the late Professor P.W Francis, author of the photograph.
