Olmec, Mexico. This basaltic rock is known as the [Monument 63] The Standard Bearer. It is 2m 56 cms high and was discovered in 1959. The bearded figure with a fine head decoration is near the foot of the piece and with arms outstretched appears to be holding an enormous fish in the form of a standard. The giant teeth of the fish are depicted clearly in the upper third of the carving.
