Joya
de Céren, El Salvador
| The Maya village of Joya
de Cerén was destroyed in an earthquake around AD600. The ruins covered
in 20 feet (6m) volcanic ash were discovered in 1976, and included houses, storage
areas, artefacts, utensils and some manioc fields. No bodies have been found and
it is thought everyone escaped. |
